Day 3 Academy + Becker Learning

Applied HVAC Design: Airside I

Load Design & Psychrometrics

November 10-12, 2026
Knoxville, Tennessee

Becker Learning and Day 3 Academy are pleased to announce a three-day, in-person workshop taught jointly by Joe Becker, P.E., and Matt Price, P.E.

Participants will learn the principles underlying load design and psychrometrics, then immediately apply them through instructor-led problems, practical exercises, and classroom discussion. The objective is practical understanding that helps participants interpret load calculations, analyze psychrometric conditions, and better anticipate HVAC system performance.

The workshop is best suited for practicing commercial HVAC professionals who are already comfortable with common HVAC systems and terminology and want deeper working proficiency in airside design. Likely participants include consulting engineers and designers, equipment sales representatives and application engineers, mechanical contractor estimators and project managers, controls professionals, facilities engineers and technical leads, and experienced HVAC technicians.

The workshop will include:

  • Three days (24 hours) of instructor-led classroom instruction
  • Comprehensive course materials, including a reference binder and psychrometric chart
  • Application problems and practical exercises
  • Lunch, refreshments, and snacks each day
  • Documentation for up to 24 professional development hours
  • Limited enrollment to preserve an interactive classroom experience

Tuition for the November workshop is $2,250 per participant. Travel, lodging, breakfast, and dinner are not included.

The November 2026 workshop is planned as the first in a three-workshop Knoxville series taught by Joe and Matt. Additional workshops are planned for February 23-25, 2027, covering Airside II (Duct Design, Fans & Fan Laws, Acoustics), and April 13-15, 2027, covering Refrigeration (Basic Refrigeration, Refrigerant Piping, Refrigerants & Our Environment).

Knoxville is served by McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), with nonstop flights from major connecting airports and convenient one-stop access from most U.S. cities.

About Joe Becker

Joe Becker, P.E., earned degrees in Naval Science and Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated from the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School. He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps before joining Trane in 1983.

During his Trane career, Joe served in engineering, marketing, sales, management, and technical training roles, including manager of technical training for the Graduate Training Program, where he taught nine six-month classes. In 2001, he founded Becker Learning and, most recently, served for a decade as lead instructor for AAON’s Masters of HVAC program.

About Matt Price

Matt Price, P.E., earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee. After beginning his career in oilfield and automotive manufacturing, he entered commercial HVAC in 2018 as an applied-equipment account executive with Hobbs & Associates.

In 2024, Matt founded Day 3 Academy and created Day 3 HVAC, an online technical onboarding program that gives newer commercial HVAC professionals the broad working foundation needed for continued technical and role-specific development.

Matt authored the March 2026 ASHRAE Journal column, "Hot Gas Havoc: Clarifying Hot Gas Reheat and Hot Gas Bypass," and is a member at large of ASHRAE's Government Affairs Committee.
